When we bring a laptop to our lab, we aim to see how it will work if you bring it to your home or office. While we use several industry-standard benchmarks like Geekbench and 3DMark, we focus heavily on real-world tests that we developed in-house.
To test stamina, the Laptop Mag Battery Test surfs the web at 150 nits of brightness until the system runs out of juice. To judge pure processing power, we use a massive spreadsheet macro that matches 65,000 names with their addresses, a video transcoder that converts 4K video to 1080p, and a Geekbench 4 synthetic test. We measure graphics prowess with both 3DMark Ice Storm / Fire Strike and a range of actual game titles.

How To Find The Right Gaming Laptop
When shopping for a gaming laptop, there's a lot to consider. To help you choose a system, here are five key points to keep in mind when choosing a system.
Budget: What do you get for the money.
You can find good cheap gaming laptops for under $1,000. However, more powerful mainstream gaming laptops often cost between $1,500-$2,000. Premium systems typically cost more than $2,000 and are stacked with high-end goodies like high-powered specs and tricked-out software.
Screen size: 15 inches is the go-to
You'll rarely find 13 or 14-inch gaming laptops these days as smaller bezels and lighter frames have given way too seriously thinner and lighter gaming laptops. That means the days of 15.6-inch laptops straining your back are (almost) over.
From there, you have 17.3-inch desktop replacements that are becoming as super svelte as their smaller counterparts. But there are still big giants that don't skimp on specifications. Although weighing in at over 8 pounds, those big boys are made for your home gaming station.
Screen resolution: 1080p for high refresh rates, 4K for details
When it comes to gaming laptop displays, you want to strike a balance between frame rate and aesthetics. And if you're planning on getting a truly mobile system then battery life is also worth noting. We recommend that you check the system with a 1080p resolution. Panel makers are now offering screens with higher refresh rates, which top out at 360Hz with a 3-millisecond response rate. But don't count 4K screens just yet as we are starting to see laptops with 4K displays with 120Hz. Keep in mind that laptops with lower resolutions tend to have longer battery life overall.
Refresh rate: 120Hz is the sweet spot
Depending on what kind of game you're playing, especially first-person shooters and MOBAs, you'll pick up anything that will increase accuracy. Surprisingly, the higher the refresh rate of the display, the more accurate your shot is. This is a phenomenon that we have experienced firsthand during many demonstrations. And while 60Hz is passable, for now, we recommend investing in a panel with at least a 120Hz refresh rate.
Intel or AMD?
A few years ago, the answer to this question undoubtedly would have been Intel. But AMD has come back strongly with its new Ryzen CPUs, which are delivering great overall performance. Thanks to the architecture in the new Ryzen chips, they superpower efficiency without sacrificing productivity. The Ryzen 5000 series CPUs have consistently impressed with their performance versus battery life.
Not to be outdone, Intel's 11th generation chips are nothing to sneeze at. Laptop makers have started rolling out systems with Intel's 11th generation H-series Tiger Lake chips. The 10-nanometer chips are extremely powerful, but still on the lower end of the spectrum with overclockable H-series CPUs, due to launch soon. Why would you want to invest in an overclockable processor, because with the touch of a button, you can squeeze even more power out of the system? This comes in handy when you are multitasking or playing a really demanding game.
Battery Life: At least 4.5 hours
The battery life of a gaming laptop is greatly reduced unless it is plugged in, especially when gaming. However, the battery life of gaming laptops has been getting longer over the years. So much so, that anything under 4.5 hours is considered below average. But the first gaming laptop we just reviewed hit double digits. With results like these, we expect gaming laptops to match their non-gaming counterparts sooner rather than later.
