Samsung's first foldable phone with S Pen support
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the first foldable phone that we recommend to people who normally call themselves early adopters but held out on last year's Fold 2. These fence-sitters will be swayed by its S Pen support, greater durability, and water resistance in an otherwise familiar-looking foldable with unchanged cameras. It’s still expensive, but starts at a slightly lower price than its predecessors, meaning it's ideal for early adopters who have been waiting on the sidelines.

Short Review
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is designed to convince you that 'third time is the allure when it comes to buying a foldable phone, and without the Galaxy Note 21, there's a lot of pressure on Samsung to make good on that adage' it happens...
The good news: We've now spent almost a week with the new Z Fold 3 and it turns out to be the first foldable phone that we can recommend to early adopters without hesitation. We're testing its familiar 2-in-1 design, which is set to fold and unfold the 7.6-inch flexible display to properly test its durability.
This foldable phone feels sturdier than its two predecessors, and it's waterproof this time around, while its tablet-like internal screen takes care of our mean stylus strokes of Samsung's new S Pen and S Pen Pro.
S Pen support is truly understandable on a screen this size, and it was something people struggled with the first two Folds. There's more writing and real estate here than any Galaxy Note smartphone, yet it's more convenient than a full-size traditional tablet because the Z Fold 3 can fold down to half its open size and stow away in a pocket. could.
It may well change the way you use your phone daily if you spring for the S Pen and carry it inside the case - the stylus is sold separately and not inside the phone Lasts. This will be troubling for longtime Note fans, even if we found the new stylus to be bigger and easier to use than the Note's tooth-pick-sized S Pen.
Also, dial back your camera expectations: This is yet another foldable with decent cameras but lacks the zoom-in oomph of the Samsung Galaxy S21 and last year's Note 20 Ultra. One standout camera perk: An under-the-screen camera neatly hides the punch hole on the more intuitive internal display, but the lack of camera quality is noticeable.
The big hook for the Z Fold 3 is its slightly cheaper price next to the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and, perhaps more convincingly, Samsung is offering excellent trade-in deals in a number of areas.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 release date and price
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 release date is Friday, August 27 in the US and UK, while it is September 10 in Australia. Pre-orders are open in all regions via Samsung's website, and the phone is gradually becoming available from other retailers and carriers over the coming weeks.
The Z Fold 3 costs cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 2's launch price, but be warned: Foldable phones are still significantly more expensive than traditional top-end smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or iPhone 12 Pro Max.
It starts at $1,799 / £1,599 / AU$2,499 for a model with 256GB of storage, while if you want extra capacity you can get the 512GB Z Fold 3 for $1,899 / £1,699 / AU$2,649. The Z Fold 2 started at $1,999 / £1,799 / AU$2,999 when it released last year.
In the US, Samsung is offering some exciting trade-in deals — up to $800 off if you turn in an older device, whether it's a phone, tablet or wearable, or a combination of all three. And you can add up to four devices to reach that maximum value. Then again, you can get this phone for $999, and that's a pretty compelling price tag.
In the UK you'll be able to get up to £250 trade-in on your phone, and upon pre-ordering you'll get a Fold starter kit that includes a charger, a case for your Z Fold 3, and an S Pen stylus...
In Australia, Samsung is offering a trade-in discount of up to AU$500, along with the option of a bonus gift bundle, which varies between the two models. You can score a Galaxy Buds Pro, Galaxy Buds Live, or one of the Powers of Productivity packs that include items like an S Pen, phone case, and charging mat.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Design and display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 retains the book-like design and functionality of its two predecessors, with a limited but usable 6.2-inch cover display on the outside of the handset, which expands to reveal a larger 7.6-inch display on the inside. opens for.
The two displays and the hinge mechanism that allows you to fold and unfold this phone combine for the most head-turning design in 2021. You're paying for the wow factor: To put this phone in your pocket, take it out and unfold it to reveal not only a 7.6-inch tablet-like display but that you're symbolically ahead of the technology curve.
This is doable, even if it does not always seem practical in all areas. You have to get out of the fact that you're paying a premium to carry the thickest phone in decades when today's thin and light smartphones are pretty cheap. It's lighter than the Z Fold 2 at 271g compared to 282g, but it's still a heavy handset.
You still have to learn to ignore the noticeable creases that are a part of this internal AMOLED display. Once you get mesmerized by the big screen and what it means for your daily use cases, it becomes a consideration.
So far we've gotten a lot of pleasure from playing games without our thumbs covering the entire display when reaching for the on-screen controls. We've even featured a video on YouTube without handing over your device to a friend and without squirming them - the Z Fold 3's screen is just that big.
The cover display expanded to 6.2 inches when the Z Fold 2 launched in 2020 due to an overwhelming response to the Z Fold 1, displaying the same dimensions here but with the screen refresh ratio upped to 120Hz, which is what we have. Internal performance first. The only thing we are missing is the S Pen support could have been added. Sadly, it will not work on the cover display of this phone.
Samsung has improved the hinge, and the materials used are more durable than those employed in all previous foldable phones we've tested. There's a noticeable difference when you unfold the Z Fold 3; It feels sturdier than the Fold 2, though durability issues are likely to remain a concern for some.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Camera and specs
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 camera specs mirror what we got last year: a 12MP f/1.8 main camera, a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera capable of 2x optical zoom.
You'll find optical image stabilization in the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras on this device, and we found the image quality to be good from nearly identical Galaxy Z Fold 2 cameras, but last year we saw the Note 20 Ultra surpass it. notably.
Now that we're in 2021, some Note fans can expect more — and the S21 Ultra, which also uses the S Pen stylus, could be an option for those who value camera capability over form factor. Huh. Foldable phones have almost everything except top-end camera prowess.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has two more cameras, both designed for selfies. On the outer screen of the phone, you'll find a 10MP f/2.2 shooter, which matches what we saw on the Z Fold 2.
More significantly, the Z Fold 3 comes with Samsung's first commercially available under-display camera, hidden under the screen on the right side of the internal screen – though when we say it's hidden, it is not completely invisible. You'll be able to see the camera poking in when the screen is off, and there's a slight matrix effect when the screen is on, meaning you'll always be aware of where the camera is.
It's a 4MP f/1.8 camera, and we found it to do a lot less work than the camera on the front screen. Photos taken with this camera were far less sharp, and we can see that many people default to the 'regular' option for their selfies.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset - at least that chip we're told is in the variant that will be on sale in the UK, while Samsung hasn't clarified specs for the US model.
The Snapdragon 888 is the chipset we've seen in most top-end smartphones in 2021, and it performs great in our experience, so we don't expect any performance issues here. The processor is paired with 12GB of RAM.
You have the option of 256GB or 512GB of onboard storage, but there's no Samsung including microSD support for extra space. The same was the case for the Galaxy Z Fold 2, so it makes sense here.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Battery and S Pen
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 packs a 4,400 mAh battery, which is 100 mAh smaller than the Z Fold 2. one touch.
We can't comment on the Z Fold 3's battery life just yet, as we haven't had a chance to use it extensively, but we found the Galaxy Z Fold 2 to be able to last a full day, and we expect it. Huh. To be a similar story here.
There's no charger in the box with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, so you'll want to keep your existing charger or buy a separate one.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 runs on Android 11 with Samsung's own One UI overlay. There are a few customizations here in line with the foldable design - for example, the keyboard appears in two separate sections on the screen - and it's pretty much the same as what we saw on the previous foldable.
The S Pen is a major addition here - it's the first time Samsung has included stylus support in a foldable phone - but it's not a necessary feature in what we've seen so far.
If you prefer using a stylus with your phone, you'll love using the S Pen on this handset's larger screen. However, there's no obvious place to store your stylus — you'll need to pick up a special case to keep it in — and it costs extra on top of the handset.
However, disappointingly, there's nowhere on the phone to store the stylus—no slot, as on the Note series, and no magnetic connection, as on Apple's iPad. Instead, you'll have to pay extra for a separate case that you'll need to carry in your pocket with the phone.
The stylus did a decent job in our limited time testing the phone. It feels a bit awkward to move the pen to the center of the main screen, as you can feel where the handset leans, although it doesn't look like you'll cause any trouble unless you press very hard. Damage.
It's also important to note here that the S Pen will only work on this handset with the main, internal display - you can't use it on an external screen.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Early verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 could be a breakthrough device for those who have been thinking of switching to a foldable phone for the past two years.
That won't convince average consumers to give up their reasonably priced Candybar-style smartphones — that's the core of Samsung's foldable phone, which appears to be the gateway device, the Z Flip 3 — but more with sufficiently deep pockets. Demanding customers may eventually become addicted.
S Pen support, which everyone was tempted to do when the Z Fold 2 premiered a year ago, finally debuts on a foldable, Samsung transferred stylus functionality to its foldable flagship as it looks to discontinue the Note line. is ready.
You don't get Samsung's best cameras, but the slightly lower price tag than last year's Fold (and, in some areas, excellent trade-in offers), make this foldable phone an accessible option for early adopters, Earlier I used to hit the snooze button. 2-in-1 phone idea but now want some much-needed wow factor in 2022.
