Even though I sit almost all day while working, office chairs haven't crossed my mind too much. Most of my work hours before March 2020 were spent at CNET Smart Home, an actual home where we test smart speakers, security cameras, and other products. The best office chair, especially for work purposes, wasn't on my radar—instead, I recorded stories straight from the dining room chairs, cushioned sofas, and butt-knotted patio furniture.

I've mainly stuck with my smart home method since the year I've been working from my home. Some days, I sit in a rocking chair on the front porch; Other days, I write from a couch. No two days are the same and I have realized how bad it is for my posture and my back. My husband is also working from home and he uses a desk that we barely touched before the pandemic. As it turns out, the no-padded seat cushion used with that desk, the no-back-support office chair aren't working well for that either.

It was time to make a change to a more traditional office chair. So I tested 10 office chairs, ranging in price from $32 to $1,395, knowing we'll be buying some of the best office chair options for our home when we're finished.

I also spoke with an ergonomics expert for general tips on how to improve work arrangements, whether at home or in a more traditional office setting. Seat height, backrest, adjustable height, adjustable lumbar support, tilt tension, headrest, seat depth, and adjustable arms are all factors to get the most out of your computer chair.

For the purposes of this list, I've only tested traditional office chairs, so if you're looking for something more like a gaming chair or drafting chair, or a kneeling chair, this may not be the right place for you.

Just a great chair is not enough

Ergonomics is the "science of work," explains Gary Allred, program director for the ergonomics division at Ohio State University's Spine Research Institute. However, this definition doesn't just apply to our jobs; The ergonomic principles can be used for any activity (this means that an ergonomic chair will not immediately cure your lower back pain). Allread and his team provide consulting services for workplaces from the manufacturing plant to the auto industry and many more. They sometimes provide input on product design to help companies understand how to build products "to make sure they can interact with people," Allread says.

Working out less than ideal can cause pain in your back, arm, hand, or wrist. You might find yourself restless, making more mistakes, or taking more breaks—all because you're uncomfortable—say, Allread. In the long run, you can end up with tendonitis or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Already makes two main suggestions anyone can try to improve how they work:

Sit with your back against your chair. ("You want the chair to do the work and not your back," he explains.)

Support your feet. Either plant your feet on the floor or, if they don't reach you, use a box or other footrest to support your feet.

If your chair doesn't have lumbar support, Allred says, you can roll up a towel, secure it with tape or rubber bands, and place it on your lower back as a lumbar cushion. to "keep the back in its natural curve." Allread also notes that companies are starting to introduce different chair sizes that support a wider range of body sizes, which is an important consideration if you're shopping for a new ergonomic office chair. and looking for the best seat height and seat depth for your needs.

"One mistake people make is they say, 'If I get a good chair, I won't be in pain anymore,' and that's really the big deal of what it takes to keep people comfortable and productive." The Hdada Office Task Desk Chair wins out as my favorite office chair of the bunch. This ergonomic office chair has a streamlined design that doesn't take up a lot of space. This task chair also has good lumbar support, armrests, and a supportive, breathable mesh backrest. At $100, it's also very affordable.

After trying out all the models, I found myself reaching for this task chair the most frequently. It lacks the cushioned comfort of my other favorite chair (scroll down to see the runner-up winner), but it's the most well-rounded model I've tested that ticks nearly every box.

2. Serta Smart Layers Arlington Air Executive Chair

It's not the sleekest-looking chair around, but what the Serta Arlington lacks in style, it makes up for in comfort and customization. Serta is known as a mattress-maker, and it tracks with the extremely comfortable Arlington chair. This ergonomic chair is by far the most cushioned model I've tried, with layers of soft cushioning on the headrest, chair backrest, seat, and padded armrests.

Despite its comfort, it also provides good support thanks to an adjustable lumbar lever under the seat.

It is currently priced at $200, which is less than the $300 list price. This is a great option if you are looking for a comfortable office chair with customizable lumbar support.

3. AmazonBasics Leather-Padded Swivel Office Chair

I immediately liked the AmazonBasics Leather-Padded Swivel Office Chair. This swivel chair was easy to assemble, the leather design looks good and the adjustable seat and back are both cushy and comfortable. At around $73, this AmazonBasics chair isn't cheap, but it's a great option that's relatively inexpensive without sacrificing much, with one exception—lumbar support.

If lumbar support is an ergonomic feature you need, consider this one of my other favorites.

Overall, though, the AmazonBasics Leather-Padded Swivel Office Chair is a comfortable, reasonably priced ergonomic chair that's easy to put together and easy on the eyes.

4. Herman Miller Aeron Chair

OK, I know. This ergonomic office chair is pretty expensive, but it also has a lot going for it – a great design, lots of adjustments, lumbar support, and, bonus, it comes in three sizes. I got a size B, which suits my and my husband's weight range and height adjustment needs.

One issue is its price, which is why it didn't win for best chair overall. Even on sale for $1,395, the price just isn't fair to most people, we included. I will be sad to see it go.

Here's a complete list of the office chairs I tested:

How did I choose my favorite? First, I assembled each chair and noted any issues with the process, except the Herman Miller Aaron Chair and the Steelcase Gesture Chair, as they came fully assembled (bonus points for that). Then, I spent a workday, or about eight hours, sitting in each chair, noting the comfort level, adjustments (such as adjustable height, adjustable backrest,, or adjustable arm features), and any issues I had. I also asked my husband to try out each chair. For reference, I'm 5 foot 7 inches, he's 6 foot 2 and we're both average weight.

What may work for me or her may not work for you, but I took into account all the tips that Gary Allred of the Spine Research Institute mentioned during my sit down and asked Kevin to do the same. was asked to:

Was the chair designed in such a way that I could rest comfortably on the back of the chair?
Were my feet touching the floor with my back to the chair?
Did I find myself moving or standing too much?
Did I experience any pain or discomfort while using a particular chair?

After seeing a label on the inside of the box that reads "Not for Adult Use," I immediately had to cut the Hodeida Armless Task Chair from running. Apparently, this chair, which regularly appears on lists of adult office chairs, has a weight limit of 100 pounds. I wasn't alone, either—many customers wrote reviews online expressing their disappointment that this chair (which is first marketed to adults, Home Depot's website doesn't have Amazon) when they were using it. So it broke. If you're an adult under 100 pounds, this chair could potentially work for you, but its limited features, including no armrests, completely ruled it out for me.

So we were under nine chairs. Despite looking great and cushiony, we both found the OFM Essential Collection Executive Office Chair to be a bit stiff and uncomfortable. It also lacks lumbar support. The HON Exposure Mesh Task Computer Chair also doesn't have lumbar support and leans too far for both of us, making it uncomfortable to sit with our backs against the backrest as Allread suggests. The BestOffice Mid-Back Ergonomic Desk Chair leans too far, although it had slightly more lumbar support than the HON Exposure chair.

Humanscale Freedom Chair mostly assembled; All I had to do was add the top half and the wheelbase. Despite the simplicity of putting this Humanscale chair together, I struggled to adjust this chair without consulting the instructions. Even after figuring it out, both my husband and I found the backrest and headrest to be in disproportionate proportions to our back and neck and extremely uncomfortable. The Steelcase Gesture Chair is highly adjustable and feels sturdy. But even with the Steelcase chair's many customizable controls, including the seat depth adjuster set to maximum depth, the seat was too small and slid down, making me feel like I could get out of the chair.

The fully loaded DXRacer Master modular gaming chair looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi movie... or a dentist's office. Appearance aside, this chair is extremely comfortable and useful, especially if you use a lot of equipment while playing and working.

The chair — available in black, maroon, and brown — is covered in microfiber leather and has an aluminum base that supports people up to 275 pounds. This is ideal for someone 6 feet tall but can grow up to 6 feet, 6 inches. The chair itself comes in at under 70 pounds.

The Master Series has internal lumbar support, which is a plus for me because it means there's no need to fidget with pillows. The same goes for the rail-mounted headrest that holds the cushion in place. The padded 4D locking armrests are not only comfortable but remain in place if you use them to help you get out of the chair. The stock seat cushion is comfortable and tapers slightly upwards at the ends, making it easy for wide bottoms. DXRacer also offers to mesh seat cushions for those who want to stay cool with more ventilation. And this is just the beginning of optimization.

This chair sets itself apart from the rest with a cup holder (no more desk spills) and two arms that support a few different devices. A laptop can be held in one hand and a tablet or mobile phone in the other. The icing on the cake is its integrated leg rest that slides under the base. All modular add-ons are sold separately.

There are some good reasons to choose the Razer Iskur over the others on this list. For example, if you love the razor brand, this is a no-brainer. From its bright green stitching to its three-headed snake logo to the snake-belly pattern on the back support, this is a chair for gamers by gamers.

The chair is covered in a multilayer synthetic leather that Razer says will withstand the peeling that is typical of standard polyurethane leather. It feels close to the leather, which is nice, but it also looks and feels like it. Regardless, if it's better than your typical PU chair, it's worth it.

The Iskur is designed for gamers weighing 299 pounds (136 kg) with a height of 5 feet, 6 inches to 6 feet, 2 inches (170 cm to 190 cm). I'm a little over 200 pounds and 6 feet, 2 inches tall, and that feels perfect. The seat cushion is firm and supportive, which is what you want when gaming or working at a desk. If you're looking for a bloated recliner on wheels, this isn't it. Likewise, the angled sides of the seat cushion hug your hips, giving you a little extra support to the sides. I love it, but if you prefer a flat, open seat design or have wide hips, you may not like the feel.

The armrests are wide and lightly cushioned. Height can be adjusted with pedals under the outer edge, while buttons on the inside let you rest left and right. Self-press the buttons on the front inner edge of the rests and you can slide them back and forth as well as move them in and out. Basically, you can dial in the exact position you want. The chair itself has height adjustment. Lean back and the whole chair tilts so that you can lean back and dream about how you will defeat your enemies.

However, the biggest feature that sets this chair apart from the pack is its lumbar support. Unlike competing models at this price, the Iskur doesn't rely on an attachable pillow that requires constant adjustment. Instead, you lift a paddle under the chair and lift the sculpted support forward like a rat-bellied snake.

3. ErgoCentric tCentric Hybrid Ergonomic Gaming Chair

Some chairs are labeled ergonomic and then there is the tcentric hybrid from egocentric. It's not a one-size-fits-all chair or even one you buy strictly by size. Instead, the Canadian-based company helps you create a chair that's the perfect fit for your body. The company also has an ergonomist on staff with whom you can video chat.

Just answer a few simple questions, enter some basic body measurements and upload your alternate front-facing and profile photo in a chair. You will have a recommendation within 24 hours. The tCentric Hybrid I tested was fitted with the company's SynchroGlide system, which combines backrest movement with the seat so that when you lean back, the seat also reclines. We asked our sample sitter what they thought was the best gaming chair overall, and they almost unanimously agreed that the best gaming chair was the Secretlab Titan 2020 Series. This ergonomic gaming chair has a large backrest with a wide lumbar pillow cushion and supports people who are 6 feet, 7 inches and weigh up to 290 pounds. It also has style. 9. DXRacer Valkyrie Series Gaming Chair

At least DXRacer was ahead in stating that this racing-style gaming chair is for people under 6 feet, with a weight capacity of 225 pounds or less. This is not a suitable seat for large and tall users. Still, I was able to get my 6-foot, 225-plus-pound frame into it reasonably well. This sturdy swivel chair is covered in polyurethane faux leather on a metal frame, with a 135-degree tilt radius and adjustable armrests. The high-back quality chair weighs about 55 pounds and comes with both an adjustable foam headrest pillow and a lumbar support cushion backrest pillow. The best gaming chair for the consummate color coordinator, the Valkyrie Racing chair comes in black with four different highlight color options: green, blue, red, and yellow.

10. DXRacer Drifting Series Gaming Chair

The DXRacer Drifting Series has a weight capacity of 220 pounds or less, so it's not the best gaming chair for anyone who has a large and tall frame and needs a little extra room in their seat. However, it is a comfortable gaming chair. It's ergonomically designed with a height-adjustable lumbar support cushion and a headrest cushion and can be tilted up to 135 degrees, making it easy to crouch comfortably even when you're sitting for long periods of time. Despite the weight limitations, we liked that it had a little less room and, with its cast, could easily be used as an ergonomic office chair.
