Google Pixel 5a leaker just tipped release date, price, and full specs
The Google Pixel 5a will allegedly arrive on August 26
While Google has shown interest in its upcoming flagship Pixel 6 smartphones coming later this year, established leaker John Prosser claims to have full details of the company's next budget smartphone, the Pixel 5a.
The Pixel 5a, already confirmed by Google due to rumors that it may be scrapped due to a lack of a chip, will arrive on Thursday, August 26, according to Prosser on their front page tech site. Google previously confirmed that availability will be limited to the US and Japan only, and it looks like it will have a smaller-scale release in these regions as well, with Prosser saying it will only be available online and in brick-and-mortar. The processor confirmed a long-standing rumor that Google may be sticking with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip that powered the previous generation Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 handsets. And the leaker said that the phone will have 6GB of RAM, a 6.4-inch display, and buyers will be able to choose between 60Hz or 90Hz operation. Obviously, the Pixel a will only come in a "mostly black" color.
The handset will reportedly include a 4,560 mAh battery. If confirmed, this is a big step up from all three members of the 2020 Pixel family, which had 3,140 mAh (Pixel 4A), 3,855 mAh (Pixel 4A 5G), and 4,080 mAh (Pixel 5) capacities respectively. You may have to make do with a standard USB-C charger, though, as Prosser claimed won't support wireless charging as it was with the Pixel 4a 5G.
To that mild disappointment, Prosser said the Pixel 5a will retain the headphone jack, as well as the IP67 rating. Photography fans may also be pleased to hear that it has the same camera as last year's Pixel 5, which is well above its price point in terms of photo quality.
Lastly, Prosser claims that the Pixel 5a will cost $450. If true, it is priced between the Pixel 4a ($349) and the Pixel 4a 5G ($499).
In Prosser's words, how much stock should you hold? While nothing is certain with the leakers (as Prosser well knows, having shaved his eyebrows earlier this year as penance for a mistake), he's one of the most reliable around. And its initial Pixel 6 design leak was recently proven correct by Google.
And in this matter he seems very confident, writing: "Due to the sources providing this information, I believe these are the final details for the device and we will see it later this month."
